What project owners need to know.
Silicon components are precision parts made from high-purity silicon that sit inside semiconductor manufacturing equipment, such as the electrodes and rings in plasma chambers, and wear out and are replaced in use. They begin as grown silicon ingots that are cut and machined. On 16 September 2026 Lam Research announced about ₹10,000 crore for its first silicon component plant in India, covering ingot production and processing.
What silicon components are
Chip-making tools that etch or deposit material on a wafer use plasma inside a sealed chamber. Some of the parts closest to that plasma are made from silicon itself, because silicon parts shed far less contamination onto a silicon wafer than many other materials would. Patent literature on plasma reaction chambers describes silicon upper electrodes and rings, and notes that parts such as the electrode plate and focus ring wear as wafers are processed and have to be replaced on a schedule.
That makes silicon components a recurring consumable, not a one-time purchase. Lam Research's subsidiary Silfex describes itself as a provider of precision silicon components for semiconductor processing and test markets, with crystal growing and ingot processing among its listed processes.
- Silicon electrodes and rings used inside plasma chambers
- Worn by the process and replaced periodically
- Purity and dimensional precision both matter
From polysilicon to ingot to machined part
The route is the same in outline as for wafers. High-purity polysilicon is melted, usually in a fused-quartz crucible, and a single crystal is grown from it, most often by the Czochralski method. The ingot is then cut, ground, machined and finished to the part's shape and surface specification instead of being sliced into thin wafers.
Because the part sits in the chamber with the customer's wafer, its metallic impurity levels, crystal quality and surface finish are tightly specified. That puts the same upstream questions on the table as for semiconductor wafers: polysilicon purity, crucible quality and process control during crystal growth.
What Lam Research announced
On 16 September 2026, ahead of SEMICON India 2026, Lam Research said it plans to invest about ₹10,000 crore over the next several years, PTI reported via The Hans India. The money is for Lam's first silicon component manufacturing facility in India, which will support a vertically integrated process covering silicon ingot production and processing for advanced semiconductor technologies, and for expanded R&D through its India Center for Engineering.
Lam has not disclosed the plant's location, capacity or start date. It said it expects to work with Indian suppliers of specialised materials, precision components, gases, chemicals, metrology and manufacturing services. At the event, Indian Infrastructure reported, Lam's COO described the plant as Lam's first silicon-component manufacturing and ingot-processing facility in India.
- About ₹10,000 crore over several years
- Silicon ingot production and processing, plus R&D
- Location, capacity and timeline not yet disclosed
What else SEMICON India 2026 signalled
The fifth SEMICON India ran from 17 to 19 September 2026 in New Delhi and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Indian Infrastructure reported that Tata Electronics said construction of its Dholera 300 mm fab and Jagiroad OSAT facility was on track, that Micron's commercial DRAM and NAND production was live at Sanand, and that Applied Materials announced a USD 5 billion 'India Vision 2035' plan.
The same report noted Tata's planned MoUs with partners including Fujifilm, Nexperia, BESI and JSR, covering areas such as wafer manufacturing, packaging and fab chemicals, and a call from Merck's chief executive for parallel local investment in ultra-pure chemicals, gases and certified suppliers. The common thread is materials: fabs need a domestic supply base around them.
What it means for India's upstream
Lam's plan is notable because it puts silicon crystal growth for semiconductor use, not only for solar, on India's industrial agenda. Crystal growth for semiconductor applications needs high-purity polysilicon, crucibles made from high-purity quartz, argon, graphite hot zones and tight process control, the same consumables India is developing for solar ingots, at a stricter grade.
Solar-grade and electronic-grade silicon are different products with different specifications, and moving from one to the other is a qualification exercise, not a relabelling. India Semiconductor Mission 2.0's materials focus is the policy frame to watch for how that ladder is funded.
- High-purity polysilicon and recharge material
- Fused-quartz crucibles and high-purity quartz sand
- Argon, vacuum and graphite hot-zone parts
How JRST supports this requirement
JRST works on the upstream inputs crystal growth depends on: high-purity quartz sand processing, crucible supply coordination and Maharashtra's first silicon-ingot line in Nagpur, built as a Czochralski process. We help project teams plan materials and equipment together. JRST has no relationship with Lam Research, and this guide summarises public reporting as of the date shown. Company plans can change; confirm against official announcements before making a procurement or investment decision.

What are silicon components in semiconductor equipment?
Precision parts made from high-purity silicon, such as electrodes and rings used inside plasma etch and deposition chambers. They wear in use and are replaced periodically.
Is Lam Research building a plant in India?
Lam announced on 16 September 2026 that it plans about ₹10,000 crore over several years for its first silicon component manufacturing facility in India, covering ingot production and processing. Location, capacity and start date have not been disclosed.
Why do chip tools use silicon parts?
Silicon parts near the plasma shed less contamination onto silicon wafers than many alternative materials, which is why purity and crystal quality are tightly specified.
Does India make semiconductor-grade silicon ingots?
Not at commercial scale yet, based on public reporting. Lam's announced plant would add semiconductor-oriented ingot production and processing; JRST's Nagpur unit completed a Czochralski ingot pilot batch in April 2026.
Is solar-grade silicon the same as semiconductor-grade?
No. Electronic-grade silicon has tighter purity and defect requirements, so moving from solar to semiconductor supply requires separate qualification.
