High-Purity Quartz Sand and Crucible Prices as China Cuts Polysilicon Output (October 2026)

A dated, sourced read of the October 2026 high-purity quartz sand and quartz crucible market in China, as reported by Shanghai Metals Market (SMM): where inner-layer sand and crucible quotes stand, why lower polysilicon output weakens crucible and sand demand, and why softer prices do not close India's own HPQ gap.

Direct answer

What project owners need to know.

High-purity quartz sand prices in China held steady through October 2026 while crucible demand weakened: on 19 October SMM quoted domestic inner-layer sand at 40,000 to 47,000 yuan per tonne and imported sand at 50,000 to 53,000 yuan per tonne, with 36-inch quartz crucibles at 6,400 to 6,600 yuan each. SMM expected China's October polysilicon output to fall below 100,000 tonnes, which means fewer ingot pulls and fewer crucibles consumed. For India, softer Chinese quotes change the price of imported material, not the amount of qualified domestic HPQ capacity.

What SMM reported in October 2026

Shanghai Metals Market's silicon-based PV summaries give the most regular public quotes for high-purity quartz sand and crucibles in China. Its 19 October 2026 morning summary carried the figures below, which were essentially unchanged from its 30 September weekly review; that review put 36-inch crucibles at 6,450 to 6,600 yuan and imported spot sand at 51,500 to 53,000 yuan per tonne.

These are Chinese domestic market quotes in yuan, excluding taxes and logistics to India. They describe market direction; they are not a price for any specific grade or contract.

  • Domestic inner-layer sand: 40,000-47,000 yuan/t
  • Domestic middle-layer sand: 21,000-24,000 yuan/t
  • Domestic outer-layer sand: 12,500-18,000 yuan/t
  • Imported high-purity quartz sand: 50,000-53,000 yuan/t
  • 33-inch quartz crucible: 5,400-5,700 yuan/piece
  • 36-inch quartz crucible: 6,400-6,600 yuan/piece

Why polysilicon cuts reach the quartz market

The chain is direct. Polysilicon is melted in a quartz crucible and grown into ingots; each Czochralski crucible is consumed in use; and the crucible's inner layer is made from the highest grade of quartz sand. When polysilicon and ingot output fall, crucible orders fall, and sand purchasing follows.

SMM's 30 September review expected China's October polysilicon production to drop by nearly 20% month on month, and its 19 October note expected output below 100,000 tonnes. Longer crucible life, where pullers run more ingots per crucible, also reduces how many crucibles a given output needs.

Why the price of sand is not the whole story

Layered pricing is a reminder that 'quartz sand' is not one product. The inner layer, which touches molten silicon, commands the highest price because purity there flows into ingot quality. Middle and outer layers carry less of the purity burden, and their prices reflect that.

A lower quote for imported sand does not make it a drop-in substitute. Crucible makers qualify a sand on their own fusion process, and ingot makers qualify the crucible on their pullers.

      04

What it does not change for India

India's Ministry of Mines defined high-purity quartz in 2026 as SiO2 above 99.99% with total impurities below 50 ppm, a stricter bar than the US Geological Survey's 100 ppm. Meeting that bar at scale, and qualifying the sand through crucible makers, is the gap that matters for India's ingot plans. A soft Chinese market eases the price of importing; it does not add domestic qualified supply.

That gap grows as ingot capacity grows. PV Tech reported an 80 GW ingot-wafer target by June 2028, against about 2 GW operating in September 2026 according to Mercom, and every new puller adds crucible demand.

What Indian buyers can do with a soft market

A buyer's market is a good time to fix what is hard to fix in a tight one.

        • Run qualification trials on a second crucible or sand source while suppliers are keen for orders
        • Ask for batch certificates showing impurity levels in ppm, not only a grade name
        • Separate inner-layer sand specifications from middle and outer layers in RFQs
        • Track SMM's weekly quotes and treat any single quote as a dated snapshot
        • Plan contracts around qualification lead time, not only around price

        Frequently asked questions

Are high-purity quartz sand prices falling in 2026?

In October 2026 SMM reported Chinese HPQ sand quotes holding steady, with domestic inner-layer sand at 40,000 to 47,000 yuan per tonne on 19 October, while crucible demand weakened. Prices are quoted weekly and can move, so always check the latest dated quote.

Why does polysilicon output affect quartz sand prices?

Fewer polysilicon tonnes mean fewer ingots pulled. Each Czochralski crucible is consumed in use and its inner layer is made from high-purity quartz sand, so lower ingot output reduces crucible orders and, in turn, sand purchasing.

What is the price of a 36-inch quartz crucible?

SMM quoted 36-inch quartz crucibles at 6,400 to 6,600 yuan per piece in China on 19 October 2026, with 33-inch crucibles at 5,400 to 5,700 yuan. These are Chinese market quotes, not delivered prices in India.

Does cheaper Chinese HPQ change India's import dependence?

No. It changes the price of imported material, not the amount of qualified high-purity quartz India can produce. Domestic sand still has to meet India's 50 ppm definition and be qualified by crucible makers.
